5th Grade Science Teacher, Feeding Futures Fellow

Lincoln Middle School

Ms. Audra J has been teaching math and science for approximately 21 years. She is excited to work with Feeding Futures. Ms. Audra was introduced to this program by one of my cohorts, Ms. Woolfolk, who also shares a love of science. She recognizes the importance of teaching scholars about starting early with recognizing the benefits of taking care of your body and what you put into it. She also thinks that students need a connection as to how food is produced and how food connects us all. Nutrition is not separated by culture or region or race.

Favorite Food Education Standard: FES #1: Food Connects Us to Each Other

Food Education Standard #1 resonates with me the most because a great deal of my most cherished memories are at the table. Either with my grandmother and/or mother, mealtimes were the times that we talked about how good the food was, how the recipes came about. Also this was a time where everyone felt like they were being heard and that their voice mattered.

A Favorite Food Memory or Recipe:

Yak….This is a great memory from my childhood and I think it was because of the name. It was merely fried pork chops (sliced and diced), with cut up onions, pepper, noodles with soy sauce. This memory is a favorite because the name was so unusual that my sisters and I would laugh every time she said it. We would all participate in cutting up the vegetable and boiling the noodles. And we were allowed to put on the noodles what we liked (my sister never liked green peppers). During meal time we would sit around the table and discuss our day, tell jokes, and just connect.

What I’m Most Excited About as a Feeding Futures Fellow:

Sharing with students how to create memories around the dinner table and how they can make choices that will affect their health. Allowing students to learn where food comes from and the process of food production before it gets to the grocery store.
