Favorite Food Education Standard:
I resonate most with the Food Education Standards which emphasize the connection between food and the environment (#3) and advocate for impactful food choices (#7). Understanding this interconnectedness is crucial in addressing the climate crisis, especially how it affects agricultural practices. Many, particularly students, are unaware of the impact of the climate crisis on farming. Habitat loss, resource overconsumption, and unsustainable farming practices threaten biodiversity and food production. Despite these challenges, advocacy can drive positive change. Educating and raising awareness equips individuals to understand agricultural issues and empowers students to develop solutions. We can support sustainable agriculture, food justice, and community equity by fostering critical thinking and promoting action.
A Favorite Food Memory or Recipe:
One of my favorite food memories is helping to cook with my aunts and uncle on football Sundays. I would wake up early to help prep meals, especially the soup of the week and various appetizers. This tradition not only taught me valuable cooking skills but also instilled a deep appreciation for family and the joy of sharing meals together.
What I’m Most Excited About as a New Fellow:
I am most excited about the Food Education Fellowship because it allows me to teach students about the origins of food and the interconnectedness of our environment and food systems. I look forward to creating engaging lessons that highlight these connections and inspire students to make informed and sustainable food choices.
