2024-25 Fellow: Schuyler Longmore is an 11th grade civics teacher at Mather High School in Chicago’s West Ridge neighborhood. Mr. Longmore has taught civics at Mather for the last 5 years. Mr. Longmore first became interested in the Pilot Light Fellowship when Mather’s school librarian introduced him to teaching with food. He is looking forward to learning more about food education.
Favorite Food Education Standard:
#1 – Food connects us to each other. One of my favorite things to do is to try new foods around Chicago. It helps me connect with other people and their cultures.
A Favorite Food Memory or Recipe:
I grew up visiting my grandmother’s cabin on a remote lake in northern Ontario. My grandmother had a vegetable garden, and the surrounding islands had abundant wild blueberries. I remember enjoying picking fresh fruits and vegetables, then helping my grandmother cook with them, from a very young age.
What I’m Most Excited About as a New Fellow:
I’m excited for my students to get excited about food education. I’m also excited to learn more about food education from other fellows.
