2025-26 Fellow: Coy M. has been a teacher since 2014. Coy became interested in the Pilot Light Fellowship when he learned that a partnership with a local restaurant or chef was part of the program and that he works be supported in developing a food education curriculum to go along with the school garden he oversees. Coy obtained a history degree from the University of British Columbia and a law degree from the the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). It was at UDC that Coy developed a passion for urban agriculture and decided to pursue it as a career.

Favorite Food Education Standard: FES #7 – We can advocate for food choices and changes that impact ourselves, our communities, and our world.” 

FES 7 because it connects food to the environment, to our bodies and represents the individual and collective power we have to change things.

A Favorite Food Memory or Recipe: 

Harvesting honey from our apiary for the first time and giving samples to every staff member.

What I’m Most Excited About as a New Fellow: 

I’m most excited to learn more about teaching food education and partnering to bring an event to my school.
