Kindergarten Teacher in Wilmington, DE
Wilmington Friends School
2024-25 Fellow Monika Simms has been teaching for over 15 years. She first became interested after seeing colleagues take part in the Fellowship. She is looking forward to bring food and fellowship to her classroom and school this year!
Favorite Food Education Standard:
Standard #1 (Food connects us to each other) resonates most because I love cooking and baking for people. Gathering together and learning about other cultural food ideas is one of my most favorite things to do.
A Favorite Food Memory or Recipe:
My favorite memory is learning to make recipes with my grandmother. It was the first place I learned about slow food before it had a name. I’ve used this to create and cook with many students. This turned a core memory into a pretty great educational one too!
What I’m Most Excited About as a New Fellow:
I am most excited to share ideas with the other Fellows. I have always enjoyed cooking and baking with children. Additionally, I want to bring food prep and learning to my Kindergarten class during the upcoming year. I want them to learn that food doesn’t have to come from a box and that sometimes food comes from very far away just for our enjoyment and nourishment.
