Favorite Food Education Standard: FES #1: Food Connects Us to Each Other.

My favorite food standard is #1 “Food Connects Us to Each Other.” This is my favorite because everyone eats. Therefore, if I can provide a lesson that makes a connection between science and food I have gained another opportunity to connect with my students. It also makes my lessons more culturally relevant to everyone and how different cultures prepare food.

A Favorite Food Memory or Recipe:

My most memorable Food memory is when I took a French class in 2nd grade. Our French teacher taught us how to make chocolate Mousse during our class. That was the first time I got to really cook anything and I still have that memory today. Cooking with my teacher that day gave me the confidence to experiment with cooking and has help me become a better cook today.

What I’m Most Excited About as a New Fellow:

My school garden is currently underutilized. I have a vision of expanding the garden so that students are not only learning about science and gardening but also learning the value of preparing naturally grown food. My school currently serves students fruits and vegetables daily, however, students refuse to eat that food and instead prefer processed food. Therefore, I would like to start a Advocacy Project around advertising methods for preparing fresh produce.
