Feeding Futures Fellow: Mrs. Cosey

6th-7th Grade Teacher, Feeding Futures Fellow

Perkins-Bass Elementary School

Mrs. Robin Alford-Cosey has been teaching for 23 years. She became interested in Feeding Futures with Pilot Light when, in past years, she worked with Pilot Light, bringing food experiences into the classroom through literacy. She looks forward to expanding the “Power of Food” to her community of students as they gain knowledge through Food Education. Robin is a native of Chicago. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Trinity Christian College with a Biology major and a Chemistry minor. Later, she attended Olivet Nazarene University to obtain her Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction. In her free time, she loves cooking and having food experiences with her family.

Favorite Food Education Standard: FES #1: Food Connects Us to Each Other.

The standard that resonates with me the most is that we can advocate for food choices and changes that impact ourselves, our communities, and our world. Food Education teaches students to recognize how a healthy diet influences emotional well-being, how emotions may affect eating habits, and how those eating habits affect their academic growth. Food Education is essential because it can help teach healthy choices and improve students’ knowledge, skills, and attributes, which can help me support my scholars more effectively and personally.

A Favorite Food Memory or Recipe:

One of my favorite memories as a teacher is teaching an after-school enrichment program that gave students culinary experiences as we cooked in the classroom. Seeing students learning to cook and try new foods on a budget was pure joy.

What I’m Most Excited About as a Feeding Futures Fellow:

I am excited about the Feeding Futures Fellowship because students will gain the “Power of Food.” My hope is that this knowledge will empower students to make informed food choices that will positively impact themselves, their families, and their communities.
