5th Grade Science Teacher, Feeding Futures Fellow
Montessori Academy for Peace
Ashley Petrie has been teaching for 13 years. She was asked by a colleague about joining the Feeding Futures with Pilot Light. First, she inquired about what all it would entail. A few days later, her students on a whim approached me and asked if we were going to incorporate food science into our curriculum this year. They expressed how they enjoyed it in the past. Ashely instantly knew that this program was exactly what her students needed and could learn and grow from. At the first meeting, she felt the passion the other educators had about this initiative. She is looking forward to teaching and growing with her students during her time as a Fellow.
Favorite Food Education Standard: FES #2: Foods have sources and origins.
Foods have sources and origins is such an interesting topic and standard to educate students on. I enjoy traveling with my family and learning about foods that are native to an area. It is such an important piece of people’s culture.
A Favorite Food Memory or Recipe:
My favorite food memory is sitting down to eat dinner with my family. It allows us time to sit down and enjoy each other’s company, share stories from our day, laugh, voice concerns, talk about our perspectives on things going on in our community and the world. It is the highlight of my day. I love being with my family. Whether it is my nuclear or extended family, food always seems to bring us together.
What I’m Most Excited About as a Feeding Futures Fellow:
I am excited to be a part of a community that is so passionate about coming together to educate students and promote healthy habits. I love the seven standards that this program is designed around and can’t wait for my students to learn new information and find a deeper meaning and connection to food.
