PreK Teacher in Chicago, IL
John M. Smyth Elementary
2025-26 Fellow: Ms. Nettles is in her first year of teaching. She first became interested in the Pilot Light Fellowship after attending a food education event hosted by her coworker, Heidi Russell, at Palmer Elementary, which inspired her to think more deeply about connecting food, community, and learning. She is looking forward to growing as an educator, collaborating with other Fellows, and developing ways to bring food-centered learning into her classroom. Ms. Nettles’ long-term goal is to create a unique program that combines a preschool and a working farm, giving children hands-on experiences with a true farm-to-table approach. With a background as a Special Education Classroom Assistant at Palmer Elementary since 2017 and years of experience supporting students in diverse learning environments, she is eager to expand her teaching practice through innovative approaches. Ms. Nettles is also pursuing her master’s degree and working toward her teaching license, bringing dedication, creativity, and a strong commitment to culturally responsive, inclusive education into her classroom.
Favorite Food Education Standard: FES #1 – Food connects us to each other.
The standard that resonates with me most is “Food connects us to each other.” Food has always been a way for me to build relationships, whether through family meals, community gatherings, or sharing recipes with friends. I saw this power firsthand at the food education event hosted by my coworker, Heidi Russell, where food created a space for learning, conversation, and joy. As a teacher, I believe meals and food-centered learning can help children feel seen, valued, and connected to one another. Food is universal—it bridges differences, celebrates culture, and reminds us that we are part of a larger community.
A Favorite Food Memory or Recipe:
One of my favorite food memories is making tacos with my family. Tacos have always been a comfort food for me, bringing people together around the table with laughter, stories, and plenty of toppings to choose from. I love how tacos allow everyone to make their plate their own—it’s a meal that celebrates individuality while creating community. As an educator, I see this same idea in the classroom, where each child brings their unique flavor to our learning environment. Sharing tacos reminds me of the joy and connection that food and education can spark when experienced together.
What I’m Most Excited About as a New Fellow:
I am most excited about the opportunity to collaborate with other passionate educators and learn creative ways to integrate food education into my classroom. I look forward to gaining new strategies and resources that will help me connect food, culture, and community with my students. Most importantly, I am excited to inspire children to see food not only as nourishment but also as a meaningful part of learning and life.
