Special Education K-2nd Grade Teacher in Pittsburgh, PA
Westwood Elementary
2025-26 Fellow: Mrs. Amato: “Hello! I am Mrs. Amato and I have been teaching for over 30 years! My Elementary Education degree is from Penn State and my Masters degree in Education (Physically and Mentally Handicapped) is from California University of PA. I have been teaching Learning Support and Special Education since 2002. I found out about the Food Education Fellowship during the 2024-2025 Pilot Light SnackTime Explorers Cohort that I participated in. I would like to continue to bring food and nutrition education to my students. Empowering my students with lifelong skills by providing them with the knowledge to make healthier choices is crucial. Additionally, gaining a better understanding of food security and sustainability is key.”
Favorite Food Education Standard: FES #1: Food Connects Us to Each Other.
The Food Education Standard that resonates with me the most is Standard #1-Food connects us to each other. Cooking together, trying new foods, or discussing favorite dishes can spark conversations and build relationships. Sharing meals with family, friends, or communities facilitates social bonds, strengthens relationships and creates lasting memories. Food fosters cultural understanding and connections that allow us to learn about traditions, history, and various perspectives through different shared experiences.
A Favorite Food Memory or Recipe:
My favorite food memory is deeply rooted in my childhood, bringing back feelings of comfort, joy, and family gatherings. Both of my Grandfathers had gardens, so naturally my father had one, too. I grew up eating a variety of fresh vegetables. We also had an amazing strawberry patch. Vegetables, salads, and fruit were always a part of our sit-down family meals.
What I’m Most Excited About as a New Fellow:
During this Food Education Fellowship, I am most excited to enrich my classroom or school by offering opportunities with hands-on food experiences. Exploring different foods could expand students’ perspectives and promote inclusivity. I am excited for students to utilize their critical thinking skills as well as analyze information about food systems, evaluate sources, and make informed decisions about their food choices. I am also excited to explore how food education can involve others and create a collaborative learning environment.
