9th-12th Grade Hydroponics Teacher in Tulsa, OK
McLain High School for Science and Technology
2024-25 Fellow Jillian Swets has been teaching for 4 years. She first became interested in the Pilot Light Fellowship through their Career Tech manager and they are looking forward to making the connection between Hydroponics and sustainable food production during their time as a Fellow. Jillian has a degree in Sustainability from the University of Texas and is passionate about environmental education. Along with Hydroponics, she will be teaching Renewable Energy (a first for her school). She leads her school’s Interact Club and is passionate about outdoor service opportunities!
Favorite Food Education Standard:
The most important standard to me is #7 – We can advocate for food choices and changes that impact ourselves, our communities, and our world. The most important part of learning is application. My main focus in teaching about food and the environment is so that students can take that information and apply it to their own lives. With their knowledge, students can advocate for their communities and beyond.
A Favorite Food Memory or Recipe:
Last year, in my Hydroponics class, we completed a unit on food and nutrition. My students spent time researching recipes and finding ways to adapt them into more nutritious meals. At the end of the unit, the students chose one recipe that they wanted to cook. It was such a fun day in class and ended with lunch!
What I’m Most Excited About as a New Fellow:
I am most excited to see students creating recipes with the produce that they grew. I’m looking forward to encouraging students to get outside of their comfort zone with the food that they eat!
