Kathleen Smallwood – 4th Grade English and Science at Waters Elementary School – Chicago, IL

Kathleen Smallwood is an experienced educator with 14 years in the classroom. Kathleen grew up on a small family farm in the San Joaquin Valley of central California. She received her bachelor’s in middle school education from Arkansas State University and her master’s degree in educational leadership from Illinois State University.

Currently, Kathleen teaches 4th grade at Waters Elementary, but she has taught 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students in the past. She co-sponsors her school’s GSA and is on the school leadership team. Kathleen loves science and hopes to inspire her students to value scientific inquiry as well as general knowledge. In her spare time, Kathleen enjoys reading, writing, and crafting. She also loves to spend time with friends and family.

This is Kathleen’s first year with Pilot Light, and she is excited to help students explore where their food comes from as well as how to best utilize food to avoid waste and pollution. Kathleen is passionate about agriculture and preserving food traditions. She hopes to help her students connect food to their lives in new, meaningful ways that will have a lasting impact on their community at large.
