Pilot Light Featured in In These Times

By Ivana Chkoumbova

Featured in an article from In These Times, Pilot Light is introduced immediately with our philosophy: to get children excited about eating healthy while being taught how foods are grown and this would help develop healthier lifestyles in Chicago. Pilot Light’s goal is to integrate our standards into the existing curriculum. This means that the lesson plans (that are united with Pilot Light standards) align with the Common Core.

At Langford, through Pilot Light’s social studies unit, the students connected their lessons in Civil Rights to food. “We have healthy snacks at Langford. The fresh fruits and vegetables are very good. I would like to have food like that in our neighborhood grocery stores,” one student wrote in a letter to Michelle Obama.

The article highlights that Pilot Light presents a model for food education in schools that is potentially scalable to rural communities.
